• Trendy Gin

From the days when British colonies introduced tonic water with the combination of quinine & carbonated water as a way to ward of  malaria & added a wee of gin, thereby giving rise to the popular Gin & Tonic, the gin has travelled a long way.
    .
McDowell”s Blue Riband Dry Gin has been in India since 1950s &  must say still a very popular brand.  In the past, most of the gin cocktails would invariably have Blue Riband as it’s base. Well with passing years, the pubs started seeing wave of new gin labels such as Hapusa, Greater Than, Stranger & Sons, Jaisalmer crafted by entrepreneurs. The trend of gin culture made a big shout & the counters started pelting some amazing cocktails right from G&T to Martini to Negroni to Gimlet to Tom Collins & many more.

Here is one simple gin cocktail made with the popular Blue Riband Gin
    Ingredients
    Gin – 45 ml
    Lemon juice – 15 ml
    Triple Sec – 15 ml
    Soda – to top
Orange wheel, Pepper & Cloves to add a wee tangy spice of life.

    Preparation Method

Combine all, except soda, and give a wee shake with some ice. Strain it in a cocktail glass with ice cubes & release some pepper & cloves as well the orange wheel & top it up with Soda.

I also take this opportunity to make a mention that I have been following my friend Morten Krag – @thecocktail.blog for a couple of year & have been mesmerised by his amazing cocktails. He has since released his Cocktail Recipe book – “Sophistication Declassified” & I am looking forward to get one of it soon. Congratulations Morten!

    Cheers!

    Mar 21st, 2020

    Nordés – Gin & Tonic

Nordés is a Spanish Gin from the Galicia region on the country’s north west Atlantic coast. It uses several local botanicals & comes with natural aromas and exquisite flavours.

On the bottle label is world map that highlights the Galician origin of Nordés and the compass, an expressive symbol that connotes  the Atlantic character.
    .
The base alcoholic drink is the wine distillate that happens to be produced by using a portion of the Galician Albariño grape. To this are added botanicals viz.,sage, laurel, verbena herb, eucalyptus, peppermint, and a type of seaweed called glasswort. All these impart the freshest subtle floral notes and white fruit aromas. The other botanicals such as juniper, ginger, cardamom, hibiscus flower, and black tea contribute subtle secondary notes that balance the final product.

I simply enjoyed making this one.
Spontaneous or rather trail and error are key to some of the wonderful  mixes in the world of mixology.
    .
Goa’s Cashew Feni was awarded Geographical Indication registration in 2009 as a speciality alcoholic beverage from Goa, described as a colourless, clear liquid. Locals just love this spirit as it’s also known for it’s medicinal property & well for the tourists visting Goa it’s a must try drink
Keeping Feni as my foundation drink I have my eyes set on the rest of white spirits with a blue punch of Curacao to finish.

    Boston Cocktail

The Boston cocktail is a citrusy and tart gin-based cocktail with underlying and lingering apricot stone fruit flavours. It’s a great drink  with apricot brandy
    .
Bols Apricot Brandy has a rich  flavor to the fresh apricot juice and the crushed apricot fruit kernel. This apricot liqueur has a faint amaretto flavor, supported by tones of orange that matches its golden-amber color. • Gin & Tonic

    Gin & Tonic

Today’s choice of Gin for my G&T is Stranger & Sons. Distilled in Goa, Stranger & Sons is made using locally sourced botanicals mainly black pepper, coriander, nutmeg and mace from a number of spice farms that are located around their distillery. A straight sip and aromas & flavours explode of this artistic gin
    .
Though, it’s rainy days in Goa, but it’s also high in humidity & G&T seems to be a good choice of cocktail in the tropical weather
    .
Today, my adjunct is the Carom leaves the seed of which is known as Ajwain. The aromatic seeds are used in adding flavour to a number of drinks & leaves used in flavouring vegetable fritters and Indian flat breads

    Tonic water – @schweppes
    Bitters – @peychaudsaperitivo
